When you are thinking of a fun woodworking project it has got to be Toy Woodworking Plans. One of my favorite projects and always a great hit with the kids is a wooden boomerang. Remember boomerangs? It is just a curved wooden stick designed to come back to you when you throw it.The boomerang does take some mechanical skill to make it work the way it is supposed to but, kids can really impress their friends when they master the technique. This is a great outdoor game that will be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Teach your children or grandchildren an almost lost art when you teach them how to throw a boomerang.
In creating a wooden boomerang, the best plywood to use would be a 1×4″ thick Baltic birch with five laminations. This is to ensure that the boomerang is strong enough and to make sure it meets its visual function.
To start off, use a small piece of plywood to create and trace a triangular-shaped device. The measurement of the angle at the apex of the triangle should be approximately 95 and 110 degrees; you will shape it to be rounded in appearence. Next would be to cut out the triangle.
When you finish then draw another triangle which will be smaller in size. This would be placed inside the triangular piece of plywood. The new triangle has to be a few inches from the wood edge and has to be big enough to suit the thrower’s hand. Make certain that the apex of this triangle is more distinctly pointed compared to the apex of the piece of plywood. Next would be to cut out the second triangle. This plywood is then shaped in a triangular form.
The ends of the boomerang must then form a semicircular and its two ends should have a rounded shape. To soften the plywood of the boomerang, place each ends in the steam of a hot pan or coffee pot and then considerately bend it upwards and outwards like a flap before letting it dry. The outcome of this process should somehow look like the ends of a horseshoe; there is really only one difference and that is that it will point a bit upwards.
Your next step is to sand the boomerang which will make it more aerodynamic. Additionally, this allows it to have a smoother finish. Remember to polish the front and back edges. Keep in mind that the tips of the boomerang should be the only ones turned. If the boomerang has warped, make sure to press or steam it to ensure that is consistently and completely flat.
When you have finished making the boomerang you can enjoy this toy with friends and family. Your end result of Toy Woodworking Plans is to create fun toys that you are specifically making for the young and young at heart.
